Most first questions are already answered elsewhere on the site, which saves everyone a round trip: publication order and where to start live on books; the most-asked practical questions — reprint permissions, submission enquiries, whether this is a real person — are addressed directly on the FAQ. If your question survives all that, it's exactly the kind worth sending.

In keeping with the unhurried pace of the rest of this desk, replies are occasional rather than immediate — closer to the rhythm of the newsletter than to a customer-service inbox.
